Garmin dēzl 780 LMT-S GPS Truck Navigator Review

If you own a truck, you need to get yourself a Trucking specific GPS Navigator to provide directions otherwise you could end up having serious problems.  Your standard GPS unit will provide you with directions and help you find the way to your destination, but it will not take into account the size of your rig, and what streets it can and cannot go down.  Directions are not going to be tailored to you and therefore will not take into account low bridges that you might not fit under, or restricted zones that you're probably too big for. Either way, a car navigator when you’re driving your truck is probably more trouble than its worth.

Garmin 780 LMT Truck GPS

A trucking GPS device will allow you to drive your truck with confidence knowing that your route does not contain highways with low bridges or restricted zones. A Truck GPS Navigator allows you to enter your truck's length, height and weight and then prepare routes that take into account roads that have lower bridges or restricted zones.

Garmin

As with nearly all things GPS, if you're going to buy a GPS unit, then you really want to stick with the brand names.  These products will be designed and tested over time, and in this case refined over the years to  cause you less problems.

Obviously in the world of GPS devices, TomTom and Garmin are the two premium brands. Garmin make the Dezl Truck GPS with is their design for a truck GPS unit.

Garmin Dēzl 780 LMT-S GPS Truck Navigator

The dezl 780LMT-S is the 2018 replacement for the 770LMTHD which in itself was a fantastic truck navigator.  The 770 is highly recommended even today, however this new model comes with a range of upgrades that make it even better.

The 780LMT-S comes with a massive 7-inch screen that has been designed to allow you to see your directions even while you're sat further away than normal.  The screen is crystal clear and comes with a special touch-screen that allows you to both easily see the screen even in direct sunlight and use the touch screen while you're wearing gloves, or your hands are dirty.

The larger screen not only means that you can see your trucking information, but you can also have more information on your screen to help you drive your truck.

The Screen

The touch-screen on this trucking navigator is very large.  It means that you will not only be able to view your truck friendly route, but also view any up-and-coming warnings, notifications or alerts such as speed limits, hills and weather conditions.

Given the large screen size, maps are also very detailed allowing for fantastic level of navigation to include turn-by-turn directions that speak street names through an extra loud internal speaker fitted directly in your Garmin Dēzl 780 Truck GPS unit, Garmin's very own active lane guidance which shows an updated animation of the best lane to be in for any different situation that you may find your truck and PhotoReal Junction View which provides a realistic view of upcoming junction to guide you to the right lane at any difficult or complicated highway interchanges.

As with all Garmin Truck GPS units, you can customize your unit to ensure that your route excludes restricted zones in the both the U.S. and Canada. When you first switch on your machine, your Dezl GPS gives you the option to customize your unit by height, weight, length, width and hazardous material therefore meaning when the unit calculates routes it will take into account this information.

The Unit also comes with a fast processor that allows for quick route calculations and re-calculations, but also powers an on-board computer that lets you create multiple routes and save them and any future trips. The computer also operated both the voice-activated navigation meaning that you can control your GPS with you voice and the trip information that the unit records such as your fuel usage, state mileage for IFTA fuel logging and hours of driving status whilst warning you of any HOS violations.

Garmin Dezl Drive Safe

Given the Garmin Dezl has been specifically designed for your truck, it has some smart functions that you will only find or quite honestly need when you’re driving your truck such as upcoming road conditions or any hazards such as Sharpe curves, bridge heights, weight limits or high wind areas.

Other Drive safe features include "Garmin Gears" which is a system designed by Garmin that will anticipate any descents or ascents and tell you what gear you should be in or warn you of any gear changes that you might need to make. This feature will show you using colored lights when to change gear and can be especially useful when approaching blind hills that you do not see until the last minute and have no time to drop down a few gears.

One of the best features of all Garmin's GPS unit is their "points of interest database" which includes thousands of truck-specific places such as truck-stops, food or rest areas and can even tell you which truck stops have showers or Wi-Fi. These type of Truck Specific points of interest databases is one of the reasons why you buy a Garmin Dezl GPS unit from another less known and probably cheaper GPS unit.

The Garmin Dezl 780LMT comes with both Lifetime Map Updates to ensure that you always have the latest maps to use with your truck GPS unit, subscription free traffic updates to ensure that you keep out of all the traffic, Bluetooth wireless technology so you can use the built-in microphone and speaker to connect with you cell phone and make hands-free phone calls and a smartphone link to to connect your android device to your GPS unit.

Finally

Overall a fantastic GPS Unit.

As always, Garmin have gone the extra mile to make sure their products are first class.  We love the fact the 780 comes with an IFTA logging feature on this device which record mileage by state and even a car mode allowing you to switch off the trucking directions and use normal directions for your drive home.

As always with Garmin, it's by no means cheap, but it's a cracking gps unit that will keep you on the road.
